QuakeSpasm Music – Troubleshooting and Video Guide

I hope the video helps you with QuakeSpasm Music as I know many people have run into many problems with getting the ripped music to work, including myself.

The QuakeSpasm_Music.txt File that comes with the QuakeSpasm Engine states as follows.

QuakeSpasm supports ogg, mp3 and wav external music files to be played
instead of cd music. What you should do is simple:

1. Use your favorite cd-ripper application and rip your quake cdrom
audio tracks, convert them to ogg or mp3 so they occupy less space,
   like track02.ogg, track03.ogg, etc.

Note #1: There is no such thing as track01: the first tracks of
original Quake and the mission pack cdroms are always data
            tracks.

Note #2: Since the Quake cdrom audio tracks are pre-emphasized, you
should de-emphasize them during or after ripping to make
them sound right. (thanks to Sander van Dijk for this note)

2. Go into your quake installation directory and create a new directory
   id1/music (for windows users id1\music).

3. If you have the Scourge of Armagon mission pack, then create another
directory hipnotic/music . If you have the Dissolution of Eternity
then create another directory rogue/music .

4. Take the ripped music files from step1, place them under id1/music.
If you have the mission packs, repeat step1 for the mission packs,
too, and place the ripped music files under hipnotic/music for the
first mission pack or under rogue/music for the second mission pack.

5. All are ready to go: When a level starts, the engine will first try
playing the necessary cdaudio track and if it doesn't find the cdrom
it will use the ripped music files instead.

Troubleshooting Music Files in Quakespasm

Now I just want to say even I was a bit confused reading all the text in the file, but I eventually did figure it out.

The first thing I want to point out is the filename of the tracks that most rips come in the form of.

  • track02.ogg

For the most part if you are getting Music Files for your mods for Quake, they come in all sorts of different filenames. Most notable I’ve found that the majority of them are ripped for the Darkplaces engine and not Quakespasm.

The Rips I had problems with were whenever the filenames were like track002.ogg.

Quakespasm will not play these automatically, but whenever I typed the music command in the console using the ~

Example

music track002

The music would start playing letting me know it was in the correct folder and Quakespasm was reading the file.

Sometimes, whenever a map loads it was saying it couldn’t find “track 2”.

Confused as clearly track002.ogg is listed in the correct folder! Why wasn’t it playing?

After renaming the file to track02.ogg the music automatically played.

Quakespasm won’t read the files automatically unless you name it in the correct format.

This is the correct format for the file name for the Quakespasm engine.

  • track02.ogg

Where do I put my Quake Mod Music Files for Quakespasm

The Quakespasm_Music.txt file assumes you already know how to install mods. But, it also jumps straight from installing the Music for the original game to the mission packs.

Here we have a simple Quake folder structure.

  • C:\Quake\

For example if you want to download the original Quake Music for ONLY the original game. You would make a new folder in id1 called music. You would then place your ripped music files into this folder with the correct filename structure above in this article.

Original Quake Music going to this folder for Quakespasm

  • C:\Quake\id1\music

Now how do you add music for mods and mission packs? It can be a little bit confusing you might think you just put everything into id1\music according to how the text reads. Or, you might even think you create another id1\music folder in your mod or mission folder.

You simply must people a music folder, into your mod or mission pack folder like so.

  • C:\Quake\xmen\music

Combined with the video and the following tips you should be able to get the music working in Quakespasm!

Quakespasm Music Conclusion

I hope this little guide and video helps many Quakefans out there as it took me a bit of tinkering to completely understand why in the world my music wasn’t working at all.

Below I’ll link directly to the music files used in most of the mods, original, and mission packs!

These are hosted by https://quaddicted.com and they are safe to use!

I might update these some other day but I hope this helps you out!

I’ll do a Darkplaces Engine Music help soon but if you stumbled upon this having Quake music problems you might find it useful. Darkplaces for mods need to be structured like this – put the .ogg files into (mod)/sound/cdtracks/

Quake 1.5 Mod is AMAZING and you should play it!

The Classic Quake Mod 1.5 brings new life to that old game we love, Quake.

With an uptick of the “Retro Shooter” revival happening this mod makes it feel like it was released alongside games like Wrath Aeon of Ruin, Ion Fury, and Nightmare Reaper.

This mod gives the game better graphics, better sound, and its more BRUTAL. Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last decade you’ve probably heard of a little Doom II Mod called Brutal Doom.

Think of this mod as the Brutal Doom but instead of Doom… It is for the Original Quake.

For all of those wondering, yes I do love Brutal Doom. If this mod can do what Brutal Doom done for the Doom Modding community but for Quake count me in!

Installing Quake 1.5 Mod

The video guide to long for ya? Need a quick guide on how to installed this mod.

Well here you go:

  • Download The Mod – https://www.moddb.com/mods/quake-15/downloads, Grab the Patches as well if problems exist
  • Copy Entire Mod to an Existing Quake Directory, I recommend creating a new directory/copy just for mods and keeping a clean version on hand. (What I mean by clean is just an untouched directory of Quake, from GOG, CD, Steam, ETC…)
  • After copying the MOD to your fresh new Quake Folder/Directory you can try to run the game from this point using the Run Quake 1.5.bat file. If it doesn’t work or gives you an error you might need to copy the contents of the darkplaces folder into the main quake directory as well.
  • For Music and Giving Quake 1.5 an Icon on your desktop be sure to watch the full video!

Hopefully this guide and video will get you playing Quake 1.5 in no time.

Quake Mod 1.5 Conclusion

The Quake 1.5 Mod has brought some new life into the original Quake. I’ve not gotten a chance to try out the multiplayer part of this mod but I heard it makes it even better!

I’m really hoping more great mods like this come out in the future for Quake. This game deserves all the love and attention it can get.

Eventually maybe enough to deserve a true sequel or at least a remake.

Finalmouse Ultralight 2 Cape Town

If you are looking for a mouse that is suppose to make you a “god” at aiming. This is the one that is suppose to do that very thing.

The reason this mouse is so expensive is because it is a fantastic mouse. Plus, the product is no longer in production!

That’s right… good luck getting your hands on this thing. Lots of online Twitch Streamers completely swear by this thing and say they won’t use anything else so take that for what its worth.

Far as I know there are no notable professional Quake Players that actually use this mouse.

BenQ Zowie FK2

This mouse is a favorite among a lot of famous Quake Pros. BenQ has been known to develop great e-sport rounded Hardware and accessories. So it makes sense that they make a solid mouse that everyone loves.

BenQ Zowie comes up almost in all “best” mouse conversations. If you want a safe gamble on a mouse for a reasonable price this is the one you should go with.

Quake Professionals who use this mouse:

  • Pikawa
  • toxjq
  • cYpheR
  • clawz
  • GaRpy

Logitech G Pro Wireless

Logitech has been developing PC peripherals for as long as I’ve been a PC user. They’ve always made some quality Mice along the way.

This mouse is wireless, lightweight, and designed great. It of course has RGB if you care about that sort of thing.

Battery life of the Logitech G Pro Wireless is said to last some people MONTHS without charging! That right you don’t have to spend $$ on batteries, just plug up and charge.

The only issue with this mouse is the hefty price tag, but whenever it comes to wireless technology you get what you pay for.

Quake Professionals who use this mouse:

  • Phaze

Razer Deathadder v2

If green is your favorite color then you might love all Razer products. The biggest problem I have with Razer mice is the software that you have to use with it. You can change the Green to whatever color you like if green isn’t your style using the software.

This is a great mouse to pick up for a decent price if you can get past the software that it uses. Lots of people seem to think it is a little intrusive at times.

It’s hard to argue anything against the best for mice for quake whenever one of Team Liquid’s players uses it to such perfection.

Quake Professionals who use this mouse:

  • DaHang

Razer Viper Ultimate

Not really much to say about this mouse other than its Wireless and pretty much has the same design as the Death Adder featured above.

Again Razer makes some great products but it seems like the biggest issues with the products isn’t really the products themselves. But, the software that you have to use to customize your mouse settings.

Wireless mouse technology also packs a heavier price tag.

Nixeus Revel Gaming Mouse

I’ll be honest…

Whenever I was making process of making this list of the Best Mice for Quake there was one Quake Pro that mouse that had to make the list.

That player was SeriousQC. (Go ahead check out his frag movie)

Considered an aiming god among Quakefans.

The crazy thing about this mouse is I’ve never heard of it, or the company who makes it until I started researching the product. Of course it was the player Serious who lead me to even discover the mouse.

Nixeus has been said to be listening to the community step by step and making the best mouse they can.

The Build quality of the mouse even at a smaller price tag, feels great. They really used high quality parts to make this mouse.

Quake Professional who use this mouse:

  • Serious

Steelseries Rival 3

I’ve owned a few SteelSeries mice in my day, but mostly for MMORPGS with about 30+ buttons for some reason.

Coming in as the Cheapest and Best Mice for Shooters and Quake if you want a great entry level mouse. This one is the one for you.

Not only will you save some money getting this mouse, but you also will be getting a solid lightweight with a great designed mouse.

Unlike Razer’s software the SteelSeries software is top-notch. Customize your mouse to your liking and get to fragging in the arena quick!

If you want to just dip your hand into the water and get started with competitive style mouse. Then this might be your best bet to getting started and from what I’ve seen.

It’s a quality product at a super low price!

Best Mice for Quake Conclusion

This list contains a lot of variety which is common in the PC gaming World. They don’t call it a Personal Computer for nothing.

I almost guarantee there is something on this list that has caught your eye wanting to see if one of these mice helps improve your aim.

So if you are tired of using your Dell optical mouse you stole from work, its time to trade it in for a quality eSports rated mouse.

Obviously these mice also work great for other First Person shooters and not just Quake. This is just a guideline on what you should look for in your mouse! Quality build, high ratings, and lightweight for those long gaming sessions.
